Random Thoughts From a Confused Mind

I recently read a post about another blog post (sorry to be vague, I can't find the links now) that was about how Bush said he just scans the headlines but relies on his staff to tell him the news. The original post thought this was a Bad Thing. It sounds more like the news reading habits of the average blog reader. Check the headlines, the visit the blogs of people whose opinions you trust to see what is worth reading further.

I mailed my box of toys to Chief Wiggles yesterday. I had made out a list of the contents of the box but had to copy it all over to the shipping label in the post office...the space on the label was barely big enough to write it all. They wouldn't let me just attach my list since their form has multiple copies and each copy needs the contents listed.

It would have been easier if, after putting everything I had bought into the box, there hadn't been a few more inches of room. I "had" to make another run to the store to get a few more items to fill it up.

Watch the site for updates on what is needed. School supplies are needed now.

I did my shopping for the toys and supplies I'm sending to Chief Wiggles. Along with the mundane but necessary things like hair brushes, combs, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss I got a couple of teddy bears, Silly Putty, some small balls, Hot Wheels, bottles of bubble solution, and lots of art supplies. There may be more, I can't remember it all now. (I really do not need to be given an excuse to go shopping!) Sketch pads, washable markers, crayons, glue sticks, and scissors can keep my kids busy for a long time so I'm pretty confident the kids there will enjoy them too. I also got some stackable cups for a toddler. I'm going to try to find a couple more baby/toddler-aged toys tomorrow before I pack up the box.

When I picked my kids up from school I told them what I had been doing. Emma (my seven-year-old daughter) suggested sending blankets. I hadn't thought of it, I guess she's the only one of us who is young enough to remember the special comfort a blanket can give.

My husband has been assigned the task of bringing home a sturdy box from work tomorrow. I'll be taking it to the post office on Thursday. I wish the Chief luck and hope he will have lots of help distributing the toys. Judging by the posts I've read, he's going to need it.

Chief Wiggles (found via Instapundit) is collecting toys to be given to Iraqi children. There are some great suggestions by visitors to the site as to what to donate.

I imagine that for some families, this is the first time in decades where children are going to have the opportunity to really have a childhood.

Toys entertain children and keep them busy (I'm not sure who will appreciate that most, the children or their mothers). Children learn through play. They practice co-ordination skills and learn to share. Toys encourage creativity. These toys will also teach children that there are people who care about them.

Off on a semi-tangent ---> Talking about toys reminded me of a Baby Blues comic strip where the young boy was taking a toy truck for show and tell. His mother asked him ahead of time "What can you tell me about your truck?" He recited a list of facts about the truck but when he was asked the same question in front of the class, his answer was, "It's mine!"

There's pride and a sense of comfort in having a toy. When was the last time you had the chance to give a gift that had the potential to make a difference in a child's life?

Gotta go, it's time for a shopping trip.

Stupid Celebrity.com has (what else would you expect?) quotations of stupid comments by celebrities.

R. Kelly - "People can say whatever they want about you without knowing the facts. They can criticize you without even knowing you and hate you when they don't even know you. All of a sudden, you're like the bin Laden of America. Osama bin Laden is the only one who knows exactly what I'm going through."

Kelly has been charged in a child pornography case. I think he is trying to convince people of his innocence. At the very least, he seems to think there shouldn't be any consequences from the news that there is a video tape of him having sex with a 14-year-old (resulting in 21 counts of child porn in Illinois plus other charges in Florida.) If I were trying to gain sympathy and imply innocence, I would be comparing myself to Richard Jewel not bin Laden.

Jewel was falsely accused of being responsible for the 1996 Olympic Park bombing in Atlanta (Eric Robert Rudolph has since been charged). Bin Laden, on the other hand, is responsible for the deaths of thousands of men, women, and children.
