Saturday, May 31, 2003 ( 7:24 PM ) MB California is working on a bill to make it illegal to use a cell phone while driving unless it is used with a headset or some device to make it hands-free. I can't see much use of this kind of law other than a bit of postitive PR. Every driver can relate to this. Who hasn't had problems with other drivers not paying attention because they are too busy talking on their phones? I just don't believe having a headset of hands-free device will help. There is a type of person whose eyes glaze over when they get on the phone. They are unaware of anything around them whether it's at home, in the office, or in the car. When on the phone, their priority of focus is the phone call. Others can pay more attention to their surroundings with the phone call being of secondary importance. Sure, the first group are more fun to talk to. You don't have your conversation interrupted every other minute with, "hold on a sec", or "what did you say?". But they are the ones who shouldn't be driving (or even walking) while talking on the phone. Hands-free won't help and may make things worse by providing a false sense of greater safety. Some related information, if your company provides or encourages cell phone use as part of your job, whether the call is business or personal, and you have an accident, they may be held liable. Permalink Friday, May 30, 2003 ( 2:25 AM ) MB French nationals are being held at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. The French government believes "if they had committed acts punishable under French law, they should be tried in France." Oh? Like the way France demonstrated what they thought of an American being tried in an American court with Ira Einhorn? Permalink Wednesday, May 28, 2003 ( 1:25 PM ) MB I should have gone back to adding sites. I should have gone out, done some housework (yeah, right), watched a movie, or taken a nap. I should have turned off my computer's speakers. April Winchell: Multimedia I began with "TV Stars Who Insist On Singing". On average, they are about as good as you would expect. I listened to Patrick MacNee and Honor Blackman singing Kinky Boots. I used to love the old Avengers shows, now I know why I liked Emma Peel better than Cathy Gale. I started to listen to Jerry Springer sing Mr. Tambourine Man. I didn't get past the first couple of lines and I only listened that long because my reflexes are too slow. Another song that I started but quickly stopped was Ed McMahon singing Thank Heaven for Little Girls. The blurb next to the link for the audio says, "Really wrong, on so many levels". Seriously. I really like the movie Gigi. I like the song. Hearing this version, my only reaction was that I wanted to go get my seven-year-old daughter from school and hide her safely away in her room. There's an interesting collection of Stairway to Heaven covers by artists including Dolly Parton, Pat Boone, and others. If you are still wondering what the heck Robert Plant has been singing, there is a spoken version performed by Leonard Teale. There are covers of Beatles songs. I listened to some of Mission Impossible/Norwegian Wood. I have enough of a sense of self preservation not to click on any of the others. Other categories of songs/recordings/evil-let-loose-upon-an-unsuspecting-public include ABBA songs in Hindi, German covers (try Johnny Cash singing I Walk the Line), Chicken Songs, and, well, go see for yourself. Just make sure you hear YMCA in Cantonese (Bizarre Covers). Some links on the site may not be appropriate for children to hear but you should be able to tell which they are by the comments next to them. Very few of the links are appropriate for anyone who wants to maintain some pretense of sanity. Permalink ( 10:15 AM ) MB I was looking for sites to add to JoeAnt this morning and came across this one with advertising jingles. Most are for food ads but there are a few others and a link to another site by the same Webmaster with ads from the Cola Wars. I spent too much time listening to some of the old commercials (Slinky, Frito Bandito, Trix with Rocky and Bullwinkle, CrackerJack, Armour hotdogs, Oscar-Mayer, Ken-L Ration Dog Food, Winston, and several others). I need to get out more. There are more ads from the 1970s here and you can watch a few clips here.
