Ick.

MANILA (Reuters) - Millions of people in Manila have been drinking super-chlorinated water this week as the body of a teenager remained stubbornly stuck in a major supply pipe.
Manila Water Co dumped large doses of the disinfectant into a reservoir serving the eastern part of the Philippine capital after the young man fell into an aqueduct on Saturday while picking fruit.

The company has insisted the water supply is safe as it tries to dislodge the body. Health officials agreed that the chances of contamination were slight but urged Manila Water to work faster.

"We will have to fish out the body first," Dr Concepcion Quizon, chief executive assistant to Health Secretary Manuel Dayrit, told reporters on Tuesday. "The public will not feel good or right using the water."

I shop at Wal*Mart. It's not my first choice but it is the closest location to me that sells fabric and other sewing items. They carry Hidden Valley Cole Slaw dressing (my local Kroger's doesn't). I am almost always irritated when I do go. The check out lines are too long and sometimes it is a chore to find someone who will cut the fabric I want to buy. Although the last time I went, it was to get a coffee maker and an associate was very helpful. He volunteered information about a couple of different ones and suggested one that he thought was the best. Actually it was one his girlfriend had...he, like me, is not a coffee drinker.

There are people/businesses in Louisville who aren't very happy with Wal*Mart. Their history of coming into small towns and out-competing small businesses doesn't impress me either. Nor does their refusal to rent property when they move a store to a new location. We have an empty-formerly-Wal*Mart building in Crestwood. It's been standing vacant for years since the store moved out of Oldham County into a new location in Jefferson County. Not only does the empty building look horrible, it has greatly decreased the chance of the shopping center it was in getting another anchor store thus reducing the traffic to the remaining stores.

All that said, they do have loyal customers. They provide merchandise that their customers want. So why is the New York Times trying to tell them how to do business? Compare NYT to WMT. Customers must be satisfied, they keep coming back. Stock holders should be satisfied...just what is it they are doing wrong again? Oh,yeah, trying to keep out obscene and violent materials. Shame on them!

It's been a while since I've posted a recipe here. This one for barbecue sauce comes from Hasenour's by way of the Louisville Courier-Journal:

Hasenour's Barbecue Sauce

2 15-ounce cans tomato sauce
1 12-ounce can tomato paste
1 32-ounce bottle ketchup
1/4 cup granulated sugar
2 tablespoons mustard
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon Tabasco
2 cloves fresh garlic, crushed
4 teaspoons salt
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 teaspoons horseradish (do not use creamy)
1/2 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup vinegar
1 quart water

In a large kettle combine all ingredients. Bring to a simmer and cook 15 minutes. Store in refrigerator. Use with pork, ribs and chicken.

Makes 3 quarts.

Notes: For a smoky flavor, add 1 tablespoon liquid smoke.

For a hotter sauce, add 1 tablespoon dry mustard, 1 tablespoon chili powder and Tabasco to taste.

For still another flavor, add 1 lemon, sliced thin. Remove after simmering.

You can find more of the most requested recipes here.
More Louisville restaurant recipes are here, including one for Hasenour's Wilted Lettuce Salad. The recipe for Hasenour's version of the Manhattan is here.
Hasenour's Restaurant closed in 1996 but you can read about its history in a book sold by Hawley-Cooke Booksellers.

I have never claimed that Louisville doesn't have its share of fools. The article in the Cincinnati Enquirer says:

Wallace, who traveled to the West Bank on a similar mission last year, said she's going back because "once you end injustice of the occupation, the violence ends."

Forget the debatable argument of who originally occupied the land. Let's even assume she is motivated by a sense of justice rather than a reaction to violence. In fact, in order to demonstrate this, I think she should any and all property she owns to Native American Indians. Hey, they were here first.

From the same article:

Bernal, a senior history major at the University of Louisville, said he wants to help the Palestinians and promote their cause.

As much as I like my alma mater, I would suggest that anyone who wants to pursue a history major look elsewhere.
