Random Thoughts From a Confused Mind

I finally began testing the editor tools on JoeAnt today. Whenever I saw another member of staff online I got them to start reviewing sites too. I'm sure I did over 100 of the Webmaster submissions and there are lots left to go through. It's been so long since I've reviewed sites I almost forgot how bad some of them can be. That's not to say that there weren't some good sites in there, but most of them weren't worth including. We don't add affiliate sites to the directory and there were several of those in the queue. I also won't add any business sites that don't have some kind of contact information other than an email address.

We should have the rest of the editor tools back this weekend so we can begin adding sites of our own chosing again. I'll have to look through my archives here to find the ones that I like so that I can add them.

More tomorrow...I'm too tired to think of anything else to say tonight.

When I check my log files for Mom's Kitchen, I always find 404s and have had to spend lots of time tracking them down. I've tried various link validators but with only partial success. Tonight I downloaded a program that checks all the links on my site and does it very quickly. It's called Xenu's Links Sleuth. There's a user's manual here.

You can have it show you a list of all the links in your site or just the ones that didn't work. After it is through checking the links you can have it show you a report page that tells what page of your site the broken links are on.

Oh, one more thing, it's free. The creator of this program doesn't ask for anything in return but does say that if you feel the need to contribute you can donate to causes he supports. (AFF and the Lisa McPherson Estate Lawsuit Fund against Scientology.)

So many of the online ecards are now charging a fee. One that is still free is Wicked Moon. They have a wide variety to pick from. Topics include the regular reasons for sending cards, humor, fantasy art, celebrities, art, and abstract. The humor tends to appeal to those of us with a slightly odd sense of humor.

Another site I like that has free ecards is Cartoonbank.com. The cards here are from cartoons that have appeared in New Yorker Magazine. I've always liked their cartoons, now if only I knew another New Yorker cartoon fan I could to send them to....

A few days ago I downloaded a program called iHateSpam. (Read the article in PC World.) I had tried MailWasher before, but with that one you have to open it first, manage the incoming mail, and then open your email. It also didn't seem to want to work with my server when I tried bouncing some spam.

With iHateSpam, it runs in your Outlook or Outlook Express (as a toolbar). You can add addresses to your friends or enemies list, mark them as spam (or not spam), and bounce email. So far I've only bounced a couple...one was an unsolicited advertisement and the other was one of those "I think you'll like this" emails with an attachment. Where I used to hate spam, now I almost hope there is some there since I enjoy bouncing it back so much.

You can download a trial version to use for 30 days. You will get a nag screen everytime you open the email account but that's the only down side I've found so far and that will go away when you register. It only works with Outlook but if you use that for your email, you should give this program a try. If I do find any problems with it, I'll post an update here.
