Saturday, August 24, 2002 ( 8:40 PM ) MB I've found a fun site for kids. Kaboose Network has three sections: Funschool, Zeeks, and KidsDomain. Funschool has free online educational games for children from preschool through 6th grade. It also offers pages to print (puzzles, wordsearches, coloring pages, origami instructions, and stickers). Zeeks has games, activities, and information about science, holidays, social studies, and other interesting stuff. There are also kid-friendly bulletin boards with a variety of topics to discuss. KidsDomain has games, crafts, graphics, reviews of software and games for kids, information about holidays, downloads, and useful links for kids and parents. This group of sites is entertaining and informative and free! It's probably one of the last sites like this for kids that doesn't require a subscription. Can access information on any computer in the world, even ones without a modem? That they have unlimited memory but it can all be saved on one small floppy disk? I bet they never have pop-ups either. The Lycos 50: Shows the top 50 searches on Lycos for the past week. Also includes archived lists. Google Zeitgeist: Offers the top 10 gaining queries, top 10 declining queries, a graph showing types of Web browsers used to access Google, operating systems, languages used, and top queries for the previous month. Also shows top ten lists for the U.K., Canada, Germany, Spain, France, Japan, and Italy. One time I saw "FinderCreations" on a top search list...but then I woke up. Oh, well, I can keep dreaming. The spammers seem to think that they are helping out small businesses who don't have the capital to advertise the same way a large corporation would. I try to be objective. I try to look at both sides of an issue...but somehow I just can't feel any sympathy for these people. They clog up my mailbox with garbage, they use cloaking to hide their identities, and people complain about the spam and the products they sell. Shouldn't this give them a clue that maybe what they are doing just isn't right? Find out more at Spamhaus.org. The commercials include some memorable ones like the Pollution PSA from 1970, Paul Masson Wine (we will sell no wine before its time), several soft drink commercials and some cigarette commercials. Check out the Kids' TV archive for clips from cartoon openings (The Beatles, Speed Racer, Spiderman, Underdog, and more). Don't miss the Schoolhouse Rock clip about (Wow!) interjections. There's also a message board to discuss your favorites from the past. Permalink ( 8:22 PM ) MB I've been reading movie spoilers. I was looking at some where I had read the books but have not seen the movies...I don't know why it still surprises me that the movies are so unlike the books. Click on the spoiler archives link to see the listing of all the movies. Each listing has a synopsis, including the ending, and a link to the movie's trailer. Permalink ( 7:11 PM ) MB Dulce de Leche 4 cups milk 2 cups sugar 1/4 tsp. baking soda pinch of ground cinnamon Combine all the ingredients in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat without stirring until the mixture boils (15 - 20 minutes). Remove from heat (it puffs up when it boils, so you need to remove it long enough for it to settle down a bit.) Reduce heat to low and place saucepan back on the burner. Cook, stirring frequently, until mixture becomes caramel colored and thickens enough that you can see the bottom of the pan when stirring (about 45 - 60 minutes). Cool and refrigerate. Use as a sauce on desserts or as a dip for fresh fruit. It's also good on toast and pancakes. You may substitute a bit of vanilla extract for the cinnamon. Links help new people find your site...this is what we want, right? A blog named "Don't Link to Us" has found sites that have "linking policies" that require you to ask permission to link to them and/or permit linking to just a few specific URLs within their sites. My favorite is the one that says, ""You may refer to the URL of this Web Site without limitation, but you may not link to this Web Site without the prior written approval of DKSystems." I think I need that one explained to me. Instead of being online, maybe they should have just made a paper copy of their site and filed it away somewhere. If you disagree with me and think access to your site should be limited, here's a filter to block links from specific URLs. Permalink |
