I was listening to A Prairie Home Companion. Marnie Nixon was one of the guests and listening to her sing (she did the voices for many actresses in some of the best known musicals) made me think about how much I've enjoyed her contribution to these movies. I like musicals...but if I were an actress in one, I would be in serious need of redubbing. I can't sing, but that doesn't stop me from singing along at home.

I checked out the PHC site and it has a section where people can send greetings to others. This one made me laugh:
"Louise,
Happy 64th birthday to Louise of Maplewood, Minnesota, from your loving daughter. Per your request, I have made you a fat-free birthday dinner. I hope that you enjoy it because no one else will.
- Carol"

We're taking a vacation to St. Pete Beach this summer. I found the hotel and booked our flights online. I tried some of the big travel sites first but ended up checking out individual airline sites. The prices were as good as those through the travel sites and I was able to do a lot more, including reserving the seats we wanted and I'll be able to do an advance check-in online the morning of our trip. I love anything that cuts down on time we have to wait in line at the airport.

I ended up going through Delta. They had the flights at the times we wanted and at a fairly good price (I'm glad we beat the recent price hike.) You can see diagrams of the planes and the seating so if you're interested in that, you'll know all about your aircraft ahead of time. If you're looking for discount flights this site has a list of airlines that don't show on those big travel site searches. If any of them fly to a city near you, you can find some great deals. There are lists of discount airlines for the U.S. and Europe.

I get spam all the time. The emails are always promising to make me richer/younger/healthier/or to enlarge body parts I'm either satisfied with or don't have. This site promised to make me younger and it came through. OK, so it recalculated my age in base 14....

Oatmeal Cookies (just because I like them):
2 sticks (1/2 pound) unsalted butter, softened
1 cup light brown sugar
1 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
3 cups rolled oats

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In bowl, beat butter until creamy, add sugars and continue to beat for about 3 minutes. Beat in eggs one at a time.

Mix flour, salt, baking powder, and nutmeg. Stir into butter mixture. Stir in oatmeal.

Form dough into 2-inch balls (16 - 20). Place dough balls onto two parchment covered cookie sheets. Bake for 22 to 25 minutes.

Let cookies cool on wire racks for 30 minutes before serving.

Here's something that's getting harder and harder to find, free e-cards. They have several for many holidays and occasions. You can also upload your own image or Flash animation to create your own card.

I found a site that is perfect for kids on a rainy day...especially if your dog has eaten all of your crayons (we used to have a dog that did that.) At ColoringSite.com your kids (or you) can spend a lot of time coloring online.Topics include animals, sports, girl power, holidays, professions, music, scenery, pets, and school.

If you prefer pages you can print out, try Free Coloring Pages. It offers several pages to print out and has links to other sites with coloring pages. I plan on printing a bunch of pages before we go on vacation to help keep my daughter entertained on the plane (and during those long waits at the airports.)

Sites I've found that offer travel games are:
Kids Domain: Games to Play on the Go
FamilyEducation.com: Travel Games for the Road
CreativityForLife tells about making a travel journal.

One game we play is "I'm going on a trip". This keeps the kids occupied whether it's in the car, on a plane, or waiting at a restaurant. The first person begins by saying, "I'm going on a trip and I'm taking _________." They need to name something beginning with the letter A. The next person repeats that and adds an item beginning with B. You take turns, continuing through the alphabet and naming all the items previously mentioned. This has helped my daughter learn the alphabet, my sons to improve their memories, and taught me that I need to double check what they pack when we do go on vacation because they sure come up with some weird stuff in this game!

The pie (see below) has been made and tested. When I first poured it into the pie shell it didn't look as if there was enough but it puffed up a bit as it cooked. Turned out to be very tasty too, btw.

We spent the afternoon at the pool. It was crowded, but not as bad as I expected. I'm looking for something to boost my energy...so I'm going to try this recipe for Brown Sugar Pie:
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 egg, slightly beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
2 heaping tablespoons flour
3 Tbls. milk
2 Tbls. melted butter
4 oz. chocolate chips
1 prepared pastry pie shell

Preheat oven to 350. In a large bowl, combine the first six ingredients. Mix on medium speed for two minutes. Add chocolate chips and stir. Pour the mixture into the pie shell and bake for 35 minutes or until lightly browned and set. Remove from oven and let cool. Serve with whipped cream or ice cream.

I just found this recipe on the DiscussCooking.com forums. I'll post later to let you know how it turned out. (But with sugar and chocolate, how could it not be good?)

Special classes for men only...I know it's a joke, but wouldn't you sign up your husband/boyfriend if some of these were really being offered?

Also, for my friends who speak several languages while I only know two (and one of them is pig latin.) Why foreign languages are useless.

I didn't think cats had rules, but now that I've read them I realize there must be some vast cat conspiracy. They did leave out a few. For example, our cat likes to race to get in front of someone walking down the hall and then go as slooooooowly as possible. Also, to keep your drink safe from being shared with the kitty, it's a good idea to place a paperback book or something similar on top of the glass if you have to leave the table...we try to keep her off the table, but as with everything else, she does what she wants.

I got an email the other day asking if I wanted to exchange links from my Mom's Kitchen site. The other site is about foraging for edible wild plants. I think it's all pretty interesting, but as picky as my kids are, I can't imagine trying to serve any of it for dinner. The Webmaster is also the author of some books which may be purchased through his site.
